It is difficult to understand post 1960s North American-European culture, art and spirituality, much less Buddhism in the west and Tibetan Buddhism itself without encountering and studying the work of Chögyam Trungpa, Rinpoche. The influence of his life, thought and teachings continues to radiate, on all continents. Here is a very short and very incomplete list of institutions Chögyam Trungpa founded and/or a few of those individuals who carry on his work in public and/or significant ways. This list is chronological, according to the founding of each institution.
My own teacher in philosophy with whom I did my PhD. said, "Fabrice, I have to tell you something. Trungpa Rinpoche is the only Buddhist author of the 20th Century. There are a lot of Buddhist teachers, but someone who is a real author, who really makes a significant contribution to the thinking of the 20th Century, that is only Trungpa Rinpoche. Do you understand?" Fabrice Midal, The Dot, Spring 2005
